FAQ:
MEMBERSHIP AND FEES
Do you offer a free trial?
Yes! We offer the first class as a free trial for all new students. It’s the best way to experience our community and teaching style without any commitment.
What are your monthly tuition rates?
Choose between $20 per class or our $150 monthly unlimited pass, valid for all disciplines.
Do you offer family discounts?
Yes, family discounts are available for larger families. All requests are assessed on a case by case basis and are granted at the discretion of Master Luke. We encourage you to speak with us directly to discuss your eligibility.
How much does a uniform cost?
Karate $80, Haidong Gumdo $200
When do I need to buy a uniform?
New students are welcome to wear comfortable athletic clothing for their first few sessions. Once you decide to enrol, we require a formal uniform to be worn for all classes and gradings.
Do I need to buy my own sparring gear?
We do not provide loaner gear for hygiene and safety reasons. Instead, all required sparring equipment is available for purchase directly through the school. This ensures that every student has high-quality, correctly fitted gear that meets our safety standards.
Are there fees for belt testings (Gradings)?
Yes, grading fees cover the cost of the new belt, certificate, and the extra time for the examination. These occur roughly every 4 months depending on the student and cost approximately $100.
SAFETY AND AGE REQUIRMENTS
Is martial arts dangerous?
Safety is our priority. All sessions are supervised by certified instructors, and we use protective equipment and controlled drills to minimize any risk of injury.
What is the minimum age for children to start?
Most programs begin at age 4 to ensure children have the necessary motor skills and focus.
Am I too old to start training?
Never. We have students starting in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. Martial arts is a lifelong journey of personal improvement.
GENERAL
Do I need to be in shape to start?
Absolutely not. The purpose of training is to get you in shape. We scale the intensity to your current fitness level.
What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable gym wear (t-shirt and leggings/shorts) is perfect. Once you decide to join permanently, we can discuss uniform requirements.
How often should I attend classes?
For consistent progress, we recommend 2–3 sessions per week, but our schedule is flexible to accommodate busy lifestyles.
How long does it take to get a Black Belt?
On average, it takes 3 to 5 years of consistent training. However, the focus is always on the quality of the technique rather than the colour of the belt.
Do I have to compete in tournaments?
Competition is entirely optional. While it is a great way to test your skills, many students train solely for fitness, self-defence, or stress relief.
What is the difference between the styles you offer?
Haidong Gumdo is a Korean martial art that focuses on sword training, teaching students’ precision, control, and discipline through structured forms and cutting techniques
Karate is a Japanese martial art that focuses on empty-handed self-defence, using punches, kicks, and blocks, to build strength, confidence, and fitness.
In simple terms, Haidong Gumdo centres on weapons-based training, while karate develops skills usings for the body for self-defence.
